W11: Appeal to Pity

A concept from Chapter 10 that I found very interesting was an appeal to pity.  An appeal to pity is when a person tries to gain support for their argument by making a person feel a sense of guilt or sadness.  I think an appeal to pity is used because people know that guilt is a big motivator for people to take action.  When pity or guilt is evoked from someone, they usually try to get rid of that sense of guilt by trying to help the cause.

An example of an appeal to pity would be the people that stand around the student union and ask people passing by “Which is cuter… a baby sea lion or a baby panda?”  They ask you this question and once you answer which is cuter, they show you a picture of that animal being mistreated.  They use the appeal to pity to get people to fight against this kind of animal cruelty.  They show the disturbing photos to evoke that sense of pity and guilt, and it definitely works.

  1. Hey Ralph Lauren!! I really enjoyed reading your post on appeal to pity, because so many of us can relate to the constant fliers and people trying to convince us of their arguments when promoting their certain causes around the student union. I, myself personally try to avoid these people that are wanting my attention because I know that if I gave them my time, I would surely be convinced to support their cause, even if I didn't have the enough money too. Appeal to pity is the worst kind of argument for me, because it's so hard to resist supporting organizations that are protecting wildlife or children who need our help in other countries. They surely can convince with appeal to pity!!! Overall, I definitely agree with you that pity and guilt really works when trying to convince. It works on me!! haha Good job!! :)

  2. what is up ralph lauren.
i really enjoyed reading your blog that you have posted for this week about appeal to pity. using this concept that is related to real life of how people mistreated others or animals is a great example to follow. i know that by having those advertisement from fliers, newspapers, and magazines everywhere around the school, is kind of hard to resist for not to help out because you have sense of pity for supporting out the cause. but sometimes there are those advertisement that can misled you because there are some people who made those fake advertisement could deceive you in to donating that does not have any cause to it. it is good that a person could have a sense on helping out the pity or needy. the appeal to pity is a great and understandable concept to pick out for this week blog. keep up the good work and have a nice weekend. peace out ralph lauren.

  3. Hi Ralph Lauren,

I love your posts and I really enjoy reading your blog. Appeal to pity is one of my favorite appeal to emotions and I feel like you really got the idea of it. I knew what it was after reading Epstein, but after reading your blog, it helped me focus on a certain kind of appeal to pity. Advertisements and companies do this all the time to get us to donate to charities and organizations. It is one of my weaknesses because it always gets to me. Just like the pictures of the animals being mistreated! When I see that, it makes me really sad so I know exactly what you are talking about!
