Nowadays, I can rarely sit down and watch television without a Proactiv commercial coming on with a new celebrity endorsing it. This commercial shows Katy Perry supporting Proactiv. She shared about her history with pimples and how Proactiv drastically cleared up her skin. Being a fan of Katy Perry, I was more interested in watching this commercial and I was also more open to trusting its claim. By using Katy Perry to promote this product and its claim, her fans like me, will typically accept this claim because they admire and trust her opinion. However, I also want to reject this claim because I have multiple friends who have tried Proactiv and say that it did absolutely nothing for them, which contradicts everything that Katy Perry has said. I cannot accept or reject Proactiv from my own personal experience because I have never tried it. Luckily, I do not have a problem with acne so I don’t have to worry about having to acquire personal experience with Proactiv.
RL,
ReplyDeleteReally can relate to your post. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen Proactive advertisements with someone famous in them. It totally is an appeal to the audience because since we have seen this person before, they are telling the truth, and genuinely want you to use the product they are getting paid to promote. I think it is so funny that some people have total faith if it is promoted by a famous person. The way I think is, even though they may have a lot of money, they are also looking to spread their name, and reputation.
Ralph Lauren,
ReplyDeleteI fully understand where you are coming from because I see Proactiv everywhere! Now that they are using celebrity to advertise their products, I bet a lot of people started purchasing it. Before all the celebrity endorsements I actually purchased Proactiv. I purchased it because it sounded like a good product and the dermatologists seemed like a reliable source. Little do I know that it was a waste of money. Proactiv actually did not work on me so the advertisement was false advertising to me. In the end I realized the authority was not a authority to trust. Even though celebrities are endorsing the product, one should not fall into the trap and trust their judgement so easily.
