W3: D2 Strong vs. Valid Arguments

An argument is considered to be a strong argument if it is possible but unlikely for the premises to be true and the conclusion to be false at the same time.  An argument is considered to be a valid argument if there is absolutely no way for the premises to be true and the conclusion to be false at the same time.

An example of a strong argument is…
Every frozen yogurt place that I or anyone I know have been to, has the flavor green tea.  Therefore, all frozen yogurt places must have the flavor green tea.

This is a strong argument because the premise is true.  However, it is not a known fact that all frozen yogurt places have the flavor green tea because we have not been to every single one.

An example of a valid argument is…
In order to enter and park in the parking lot, a person needs to have a parking permit.  Therefore, whoever is parked in the parking lot has a parking permit.

This is considered a valid argument because it is simply impossible for someone to park in the parking lot without a parking permit.

  1. Hellossss Ralph Lauren,

Awesome post about valid and strong arguments. I agree with your definitions of valid and strong arguments. Also its true some people do believe that since one yogurt shop has green tea yogurt all yogurt shops should have it. Totally misleading because the yogurt shop I am currently working at does not have green tea yogurt. We did have it once but I did not like it. And I don't think much people liked it either since its always filled not empty. Anyways, the valid argument was very straight forward and easily understood. Overall great job! Keep up the great work!

  2. Nice post with valid and strong arguments! I like how you divided up your post so that it was easier to read and understand. If it were just one big chunk of information, it would be really overwhelming to read. Also, I like how you first defined a strong and a valid argument to put down a foundation into what you will be discussing. I honestly thought that all frozen yogurt places had that green tea flavor because it seems like everybody loves or likes that flavor. Also, your simple and brief analysis after each example made your post even more understandable.
